Frank is a diving medicine physiologist and an active exploration diver. He is researching a lot on deep and long cold water technical decompression dives including habitats or multilevel profiles. Together with his former wife Dr. Andrea Köhler PhD he does military research on extreme decompression profiles for submarine rescue manoeuvers. For nearly 20 years he is studying now different and complex decompression co-factors beyond the algorithm. Frank feels at home in his cold and dark mountain lakes in Austria where he is accomplishing his scientific missions through the year. He is part of the Utopia exploration project in Sardinia with his friend Toddy Wälde as well in Mexico in the Robbie Schmittner Expedition Team. Together with Andrea he is actually researching different decompression strategies and oxygen toxicities of the lungs in CCR divers.
Beside his scientific projects he works as leading senior physician at the university clinic in Innsbruck, the emergency department and intensive care unit and runs the diving medicine outpatient clinic that is visited by technical divers from all over the world. Frank is forensic expert for diving accidents worldwide and examines fatal accidents for local prosecutors. He wirtes books, chapters and holds lectures in Europe for scientists, divers and physicians. In his rare spare time he is teaching and training with his technical diving students of all levels or he is flying in the emergency rescue helicopter in the tyrolean mountains.
