Germán Yáñez Mendoza

Germán holds a PhD in Subterranean Environments and works as an environmental advisor for the local government on Cozumel Island. His primary passion is underwater and dry cave exploration, especially in sumps (siphons). For the past 38 years, he has dedicated his life to exploring caves in various terrains— including mountains, deserts, and jungles —across Mexico and in countries such as Guatemala, Belize, Cuba, Costa Rica, and Panama. Germán Yañez is a recognized authority in cave exploration in Mexico, having explored hundreds of caves, both in dry and underwater sections, and he has completed at least 2,000 dives throughout his career as an explorer and mentor.

He has authored approximately 12 scientific articles on newly discovered cave-adapted fauna in Mexican caves, with a few species named in his honor. Additionally, he has written four books covering topics such as cave diving, underwater cave rescue, and cave fauna.

For the past 35 years, Germán has served as an experienced instructor trainer for various international organizations. He has conducted workshops for recreational divers and all levels of technical diving, including cave diving, mixed gas diving, rebreather diving, cave cartography and survey, DPV diving, sidemount diving, stage diving, extended range diving, nitrox and decompression procedures, solo diving, scientific diving, and sump diving. Germán is also a skilled speleologist and a Single Rope Technique Instructor.

As a certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-Paramedic), he enjoys teaching Wilderness First Aid (WFA) programs and is a qualified cave rescue instructor through the Cuban Speleological Society (SEC) and ICAN Worldwide. Furthermore, he is an experienced and certified underwater rescue and recovery instructor with the International Underwater Cave Rescue and Recovery Organization (IUCRR).

Germán’s expeditions have been featured in the National Geographic TV series “Misterios del Inframundo.” He has also served for years as a CCR experimental pilot for the Nautilus, Kiss Sidewinder, and Talk units, conducting a wide range of dives, including dives to depths of 120 meters and long-range cave dives.
